Ultrasound that can detect marine waste

FURUNO is a company that has long utilized advanced marine sensing technology to support safe navigation and stable fishing operations across the world’s oceans. Through the development of marine DX technologies that reveal what’s hidden beneath the surface, we are advancing sea condition forecasting, improving efficiency in the fisheries industry, and promoting resource-managed fishing. In short, we have developed a range of original technologies to provide even greater support to those who work at sea. By combining one of our core technologies, ultrasound, with sea condition forecasting, we aim to visualize the previously invisible movement of marine debris.

It’s estimated that around 95% of waste flowing from land into the ocean eventually sinks beneath the surface. Our vision is to use sea condition forecasting to identify where this submerged debris accumulates, then capture its presence using ultrasound technology, and organize the data into a comprehensive database. This approach could offer a level of precision akin to peering directly onto the ocean floor—enabling us to pinpoint both the location and volume of underwater waste. Our journey to make this vision a reality is already underway.

While our role focuses on making underwater debris visible through advanced technology, we also rely on the support of partners—those who can retrieve waste from the ocean floor, transport it, and repurpose it into valuable resources. "Zero Ocean Waste Osaka" Project

In February 2025, under the shared vision of a 'Zero Marine Waste Plan,' Osaka Prefecture, Osaka University, and FURUNO formed a strategic partnership to launch a project aimed at making Osaka Bay the cleanest bay in the world. At FURUNO, we are committed to creating a better future for the ocean, both for society and the environment. By contributing our expertise and advanced marine technologies, we are actively supporting the realization of the Osaka Blue Ocean Vision, which aims to eliminate new marine plastic pollution by 2050.
